The Graduate
Evan Baxter: [on the ark, addressing a big crowd] People! The flood is imminent! [everyone looks around, bewildered, and up at the sunny sky. Evan addresses the heavens] Evan Baxter: Is it too much to ask for a LITTLE PRECIPITATION?
The much awaited convocation was held yesterday @ SIM HQ @ 3pm.
However, the action started the night before that.
Wednesday night’s training was so exciting that the netball court took off my skin as a souvenir.
We did physical training, running up and down the court, kicking the targets and even incorporating patterns into the relay matches.
I got a huge blister, but didn’t think much of it.
Consequently, it broke and the skin got torn off in the process of running. When I finally realized how bad it had gotten, it was already too late.
The only remedy was to cut off the skin, wash the raw skin and get the wound covered.
Then… being me, I plastered the wound and continued training.
Did sparing with Woei Jun.
-dodges the flying slippers-
Training lasted all the way till 10pm.
That’s when Alvin and Jared turned up for supper.
White Tangerine being the usual venue.
Had a fusion of dishes which was healthy and oh so satisfying~
Talked talked, rubbished, talked some more and then headed home in a cab.
Went online not long after reaching home and stayed on the net till about 1am.
It was at that time that I decided to have another look at the convocation booklet – Horror of horrors; I had gotten the timing of the briefing wrong.
What I thought was supposed to be the start of the briefing was actually the deadline for which all participants were to be seated in the hall!
And registration was to start 1.5 hours earlier than that!
Yes, I kinda freaked out… but seeing that it was already way past my bedtime and everyone who would be attending was probably asleep already, I didn’t think it would be worth my energy to fret about it.
Mentally placing the matter aside, I went into knock out mood the moment my head touched the pillow.
I was woken up barely 6 hours later by my mother’s voice in the hall.
Yeap, she was talking rather loudly… x.xlll
Since my alarm clock was set for 2 hours later, I decided to settle the problem of timing and went back to sleep.
Good decision, because had I not done so, I doubt I would have been able to go back to sleep with so much on my mind and with time running out no less.
-hysterical laughter-
In no time, the alarm went off and the official preparation for the convocation began.
The blouse was ironed, the gown was pressed and the relevant items were all placed in the plastic bag. ‘War-paint’ was applied and I blew out of the house before 11.30am.
Unfortunately, due to the biting heat, I lost more than half my makeup before I could get to the MRT station. And the most embarrassing situation presented itself to me on the LRT. Something that I shall remember for a very long time to come. I would like to say Thank You to the Auntie who decided to save this extremely blur child from further humiliation.
Got myself to the school without losing more makeup and had a very quick lunch with Diana before getting myself to the Grand Hall to get the registration done.
Caroline advised me to go get robed up as soon as possible to avoid the crowd. I am very glad that I listened because less than ten minutes later, the throng of graduates to be filled up the entire floor.
It was hard to spot my parents and brother, let alone spot certain friends.
To quote Ying Ying, “There are so many clones around!”
And all the clones went into the Grand Hall at 2.15pm for the briefing.
Very glad that my family made it down with time to spare.
Hence better seats for them. Hehe~
The briefing was rather detailed but I doubt anyone minded. The nerves were getting to all of us, so much so that some students were jittering in their seats.
The ceremony started at 3pm sharp with the procession of big wigs. Hats that were square and hats that looked like cream puffs.
Curry pok anyone?
Speeches were made by the VIPs. Long enough to put my brother to sleep but not enough to give a person good rest. 150 year anniversary celebration this year. It’s been a long time since the first person started their external course with UOL. Haha… I wonder what kind of honors that person achieved.
Hmmm…
There were plenty of procedures to follow thus making the entire process seem more like a factory production line rather than a very special occasion.
Haha… okok, it depends on which view point you see the situation from lah… very subjective.
To me, it was a combination of both. Good and not so good, but still good overall =]
I got my certificate and had my photo taken with the Vice Chancellor. Even had the honor of shaking Rosie Gosling’s hand during my time on stage… okok… everyone had that chance lah~
-hysterical laughter-
Near miss for Julia. She was able to attend the graduation only because I decided to call her. Long story but she does owe me one. A BIG one xp
Photo taking filled the school once we all left the hall.
People flashing cameras here and there.
Plenty of groups huddled together to commemorate the occasion.
I had my own group of friends shooting pictures with and of me.
Group photos with my family members, study buddies and pals.
The rain did not stop us from having a very fun time.
My study group blocked the passage way to the atrium while taking pictures for more than ten minutes… hahah.. thanks in part to our parents who held up cameras and shot us from 1 meter away.
Hahahaa~
Having accepted to take over Eileen’s classes the night before, I had to say my farewells and jump into the car to head up to Punggol.
The rain and traffic jams made sure that I was late for 45 minutes.
But all was well when I arrived. The students were well taken care of by Yvonne. Hehe…
The two classes went on very successfully. Thank God.
By the time I reached home.
It was once again time for me to knock out, but I still had to make sure that my inbox had been cleared and other things had been checkout online. Once again, my head only hit the pillow at 1 plus in the morning.
-psychotic laughter-
Yes it was a VERY good day and I would like to make my thanks known.
To Yang Mui and Diana, for coming to school to take pictures with me =] Thank you for being the impromptu photographers as well!
Yingying, I LOVE THE FLOWERS! Hehe… I felt like a super star when you gave them to me lor~ They now sit on my table in a vase. Will be taking a lot of photos with and of them.
Claudia, my makeup would have all been gone without your help. Haha~
Julia, for making the ceremony less boring and adding that extra dash of crazy to the day.
Desmond, Keith, Yen, Ya Hui, Claudia, Gary and Eddie, the photo taking was so fun~
Joel… thanks for waiting for me, will be sending you the photo soon.
My friends who were also at the graduation… if I have missed out your names… forgive me please. We’ve still got time to retake em’ photos aye? Deadline for returning the gowns is the 14th.WAHAHAHAHA~
Saving the best for last, my family. Just because and so much much more.
And… least I forget and not give Him the glory – My God.
He made the day, and it was perfect. Like everything else He creates.
To God be the glory.
Time to sing doxology!
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise him above, ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Amen!
-does the dance of joy-
